Economics student Martijn van Oosten wins two silver medals at Universiade

UG student Martijn van Oosten has won two silver medals for speed skating at the Winter Universiade in Almaty. Just a day after coming in second in the 1500 meters race, the 24-year old economics student was able to pocket a second silver medal, for the 1000 meters race. Van Oosten finished in 1:10,12. Minkyu Cha (Korea) won gold, finishing in 1:09.56, while Ryu Kosaka (Japan) won bronze (1:10.58).

Van Oosten had already won a silver medal on Thursday, when he finished at 1:49.53 in the 1500 meters race. Only Kirill Golubev (Russia) was faster, with a time of 1:49.30. The Japanese Junya Miwa skated to the bronze medal in 1:49.61. Van Oosten combines his studies at the Faculty of Economics and Business with high-level sports for Team Platina.
