Maxim Laurijssen wins NIP A&O Thesis Prize 2014
Maxim Laurijssen, PhD Student in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behaviour at the Faculty of Economics and Business, was awarded with the NIP (Dutch Institute of Psychologists) Thesis Prize 2014. The judges were unanimous in their decision to select the Master’s thesis entitled “Harnessing Against Psychopathic Leaders: The Moderating Role of Ethical Culture in the Relationship between Corporate Psychopathy and Destructive Leadership” as the winner. The judges were convinced by the strong theoretical foundation, the elegance of the methods used, and the practical importance of the research topic.
Psychopathy
Maxim Laurijssen’s Master’s thesis, which was written under supervision of prof. dr. Barbara Wisse, tested whether psychopathic leaders show destructive leadership and whether this destructive leadership can be mitigated. The findings of three studies demonstrate that leader psychopathy is positively associated with destructive leadership. Yet, the destructive leadership displayed by psychopathic leaders can be attenuated by a strong ethical culture – which is characterized by clear norms, transparency of behaviour, and the sanctioning of unethical behaviour.
