FEB graduate top official in Europe: Alexander Italianer new Secretary General European Commission

Alexander Italianer, who completed his university education in econometrics and his PhD in economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), is the new Secretary General of the European Commission since 1 September, as successor to Catherine Day. Italianer thus stands at the head of the 30,000 European officials.

One of his Directors General is Maarten Verwey, also an alumnus of the FEB. Since 1 July Verwey is Director General in the field of Structural Reform Support Service.

Curriculum vitae

Alexander Italianer (1956) graduated in econometrics in 1980 and obtained his PhD in economics in 1986 in Groningen. In 1985 he started working at the European Commission. Before his appointment as Secretary General he had the daily management of the Directorate-General for Competition, which supervises the prevention of unfair competition within the EU.

Maarten Verwey (1970) obtained his Master’s Degree in Economics (macro economics and finance) at the University of Groningen in 1994.
