The department of Innovation Management & Strategy (IMS) develops and disseminates knowledge in four core areas: collaborative innovation, sustainable strategy and corporate governance, ICT and organisational change, and entrepreneurship. The department consists of 45 professors and PhD candidates, that have achieved awards and international recognition for their research and publish in high-quality journals. The department has a strong focus on teaching excellence and established an outstanding reputation for the quality of its teachers. The group is also committed to the region and contributes to its development by giving advice, support and visibility to the local business community.
The group’s researchers study the resources, capabilities and organisational practices that facilitate innovation, organisational change and entrepreneurship and thus help to improve business performance. These studies investigate the processes, practices and outcomes of organisations of all sizes, operating in a wide variety of industry sectors, including both for profit and non-profit organisations. The high quality of the group’s research has resulted in numerous publications in leading international journals (such as Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Journal of Business Venturing). Several of our researchers' papers have been nominated for or won Best Paper awards. Many members of the IMS department serve on editorial boards of prestigious management journals. IMS researchers have also been successful in receiving substantial research grants from national and European institutions, such as the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the European Investment Bank.
The IMS department maintains an extensive network of contacts with business and government institutions. These organisations function as partners in research, while the broader business community is offered advice and training through the Vinci Centre of Expertise. In collaboration with The Northern Netherlands Provinces Alliance, Vinci conducts the annual Innovation Monitor of the Northern Netherlands. In this monitor, the innovation activities and performance implications of small and medium-sized companies in the region are mapped and analysed. The societal relevance of the research conducted by IMS scholars is evidenced by frequent quotes in the Dutch media.
The IMS department teaches bachelor, master, PhD and executive courses on a broad range of topics related to the strategic management of innovation, organisational change and entrepreneurship. Students are taught advanced theories by experienced researchers. Working with the latest knowledge on innovation management and entrepreneurship, students are trained to develop the professional competences that are relevant in today’s knowledge economy. Students work in teams, consisting of several nationalities. The department is also actively involved in the Research Master of the SOM graduate school.
