Stijn Broekema (MSc Marketing and MSc Finance) best FEB student, winner of GUF-100 prize
With a grade 10 for his MSc Marketing thesis, and a current average grade of 9.3 on his nearly finished MSc in Finance, Stijn Broekema is declared the best student of FEB. On Friday 1 July 2016, during the official close of the academic year, the University of Groningen will award GUF-100 prizes to nine outstanding students, the best of each faculty. As the best FEB student, Stijn is also one of the 9 candidates who will compete for the overall “Aart Bosman Student Excellence Award”.
In 2010 Stijn started with the BSc in Economics and Business Economics (E&BE) and he became winner of the FEB Freshman of the Year award in E&BE. For his bachelor he obtained 220 ECTS in total, whereas a minimum of 180 is needed. He studied abroad in the USA and graduated cum laude. Stijn continued studying at FEB by taking two master’s degree programmes: Marketing Intelligence and Finance.
Grade 10
His Master’s thesis in Marketing was graded with a 10. “Something I have not seen before in my career, “ says Jaap Wieringa, Professor of Marketing and Stijn’s thesis supervisor. In the pharmaceutical industry he investigated how new product announcements influenced shareholder value. “A very innovative question, “says Wieringa, “which he researched excellently: in the short time available he managed to acquire a valuable dataset, and analysed the set with econometric techniques that are not even taught in this Master.”
The thesis will be submitted for publication in a top Marketing journal and he has already won the Leeflang award for best Marketing Thesis at FEB. Also the audience prize of the Leeflang Award went to Stijn “Proof of his excellent communication skills to explain a difficult subject to a laymen’s audience”.
Outstanding
“Stijn is a truly outstanding student”, Wieringa continues. “Also by giving feedback to and helping other students in his thesis group with analysing their data and improving their reports. In addition to his studies, Stijn has been a student-assistant in various courses, twice a mentor for first-year students, and year representative for his BSc programme. For the student association Risk, he was chairman of the London Banking Tour committee. Furthermore, he has been active for the company Studeer Slim since 2011, helping students with exam preparation extra tutoring.”
GUF-100 prizes and Excellence Award
The GUF-100 prizes for excellent students were first awarded in 1993 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Groningen University Fund (GUF). Prizes were awarded every five years until 2010, and yearly since then. The Excellence Award was first awarded in 2009 to mark the foundation of the University of Groningen Honours College. The winner is chosen from among the winners of the GUF-100 prizes.
Each GUF-100 prize is worth € 2,500 and the winner of the Student Excellence Award receives another € 2,500.
