Taking good care of yourself

Your student life is intense. That is why it is important to regularly check in with yourself and ask: how am I doing? Am I still in balance?
Taking good care of yourself does not have to be complicated – small things can make a big difference. Below you will find practical tips on what you can do yourself and where you can go for support.

Sleep matters
Getting enough good quality sleep helps you concentrate better and feel more balanced.
-
Meditation can help you fall asleep more easily. Try using the Headspace app, for example.
-
Would you like to get started with reliable, free online self-support at home? For example, a module on sleeping well or worrying less? University of Groningen students can use the online platform NewHealth anonymously and free of charge. There are various topics to choose from.
-
Would you prefer to attend a (live) training course or workshop on topics such as sleeping well, mindfulness or meditation? Check out the range of courses on offer at the UG’s Student Service Centre. The training courses and workshops are (almost) free and valuable – you will receive many practical tips that you can apply immediately.

Calm your mind
Especially when you are studying. Schedule breaks and find out what really helps you relax. Consider taking a short walk in the park, meditating for 10 minutes, or trying to leave your mobile phone at home. Endless scrolling will not help you relax.

Maintain balance and boundaries
Consciously manage your energy and know that it is acceptable to set boundaries and guard your time. Do you have doubts or difficulties with this?
Talk about it with someone you trust.
It sounds cliché, but it really helps to get things off your chest. Think of:
-
A good friend, roommate or family member.
-
Your mentor or study advisor. The study advisor can also help you with concerns or questions about study planning, missed exams (study delay) and BSA.
-
External organisations/websites you can turn to, for example:
-
All Ears, which offers walk-in consultation hours with student workers at the Harmony Building and at Zernike.
-
In je bol.nl (Dutch website) offers a listening ear via chat and phone, reliable information, experiences of others, and tips & tools to get started yourself.
-

Exercise and sport
Exercise reduces stress, improves your mood and increases your resilience. So it's a good idea to walk more (together), cycle more often and/or exercise regularly.
-
The ACLO sports centre serves the communities of the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. It offers students a wide range of sports and exercise facilities.
-
The ACLO’s website lists all of the available student sports associations. Of course, there are also other sports associations in Groningen and the surrounding area that you can join.
-
Do you study or live in Leeuwarden and would you like to exercise in Leeuwarden? At motion centre Leeuwarden you will find many different sports activities and as a student you can gain access with a discount.

Eat and drink consciously
What you eat and drink affects your energy levels and mood. A regular, healthy and varied diet is good for you. Drinking enough water is also important.
