If you're reading this, you're probably about to begin an exciting new chapter in your life: you're moving to Groningen! During this time, there’s a lot coming your way: new people, and a new culture. It may feel a bit overwhelming: where should you go, how does the education system work, how do you find an affordable room, and where on earth do you get a decent bike?
Luckily, there's the KEI-week!
The KEI-week is the official introduction week for all new students in Groningen. It’s a fun and low-threshold way to get to know Dutch student culture, and the city itself. Throughout the week, you’ll be guided by KEI-leaders: students who once stood exactly where you are now. They’ll show you around the city, take you to events, and give you tips to help you settle in as a newcomer.
What makes the KEI-week special is that it’s not focused on your studies, but on everything outside of the classroom. You get to know the city, explore student life, and — maybe most importantly — you’ll meet lots of other students, both from the Netherlands and from all over the world. Whether you’re from around the corner or you’ve just arrived from another continent, the KEI-week helps you feel at home.
Studying in Groningen also means becoming part of the vibrant student life . During the KEI-week, you’ll get to know all kinds of student associations. Whether you’re into sports, music, theatre, or just want to meet new people at a casual social gathering, there’s something for everyone. You’ll have the chance to try things out and see where you feel most comfortable!

And yes, the KEI-week is known for its parties, pub crawls and afterparties, but there’s so much more to it. The programme also includes cultural, sports, and informative activities. Everything is voluntary, so you can decide what you want to join and what not. That makes it relaxed and accessible, even if you prefer daytime events over late nights.
For many students, the KEI-week becomes the foundation of their social life in Groningen. You’ll meet tons of people, including friends who might stay with you for the rest of your student years. You’ll be placed in a KEI group with around 14 other students, either with other internationals or in a Dutch-speaking group, whichever you prefer. This gives you a small, supportive group to experience the week with.

And don’t worry if you don’t know what gezellig means yet, or if you’ve never heard of an eierbal. This is exactly the kind of environment where it’s easy to ask questions and learn about what’s typically Dutch, or specifically Groningen. Everyone is new here, and no one will think it’s strange if you ask something in English or don’t know the local customs yet.
Whether you’re outgoing or a bit more introverted, whether you already have a room or are still looking, whether you love rugby or theatre, the KEI-week truly has something for everyone. It’s the most fun and welcoming way to get to know Groningen and discover what kind of student you want to be. And it turns a complicated transition into something a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable!
