Party Picks

Events

Oh King’s Day, that crazy day where the Dutch collectively dress in Orange (the national colour, because of history) and collectively act as if they won the Superbowl. The celebrations that ensue are very intense - as in, you won’t be able to walk in the Poelestraat without being trampled by a very large crowd of orange Dutch people. Still, it’s one of those days you need to experience properly - here are our tips.

Vrijmarkt Koningsdag

King’s Day is one of the only moments of the year where people are allowed to sell things on the street without a permit. Take a break from all the parties and take a moment to walk through the flee market with friends to judge people (and kids) based on what they think they can still sell.

Kingsland Festival 2019

The weather forecast on Saturday promises a great day with highs of 14°C and chances of rain. The perfect kind of weather to go to Stadspark for Kingsland. It promises to be a real bonding experience for you and your friends.

ESN goes Groningen (NL)

ESN is making the difficult choices for you with ESN goes Groningen: what should you do this weekend? You’ll meet other international students to celebrate King’s Day with, the only con is that it’s for internationals studying in Göttingen, not in Groningen; I doubt they’ll notice though.

Grachtenparade 2019

Grachtenparade” is Dutch for “canal parade”. On Saturday, there will be a parade of different floatable vessels through the canals. As you can probably guess, there’ll be a lot of orange, not just because it’s King’s day and that is the Netherland’s national colour, but also because they decided to make the theme of the parade “orange”.

Irish Dance Lessons

After showing your nationalism and celebrating the Dutch monarch all weekend, you might feel the need to get up at 4 p.m. just in time to make it to the Irish Dance Lessons. Our generation is made up of world citizens after all; we participate in all the international events out there.

Hi! My name’s Marije, and I study English Language and Culture. I’m half Dutch half German, but I grew up in Africa (starts thinking of suitable Mean Girls quotes to reference). When I’m not out, studying or writing something, I’m inside, wrapped in a blanket binge watching a new tv-show.
