The Englishman John Dalton (1766 - 1844), son to a weaver, was a chemist, physicist and meteorologist.

He introduced the atomic theory into chemistry. In 1808, he published a theory according to which:

  1. elements consist of atoms
  2. atoms of the same element have the same mass
  3. atoms of different elements have different masses
  4. atoms themselves never change

What atoms consist of, Dalton did not know.
