A soccer ball, swirling leaves in autumn: nearly everything that moves is subjected to turbulent flow. Turbulence can cost a lot of energy and might lead to a higher fuel consumption of cars and airplanes. The turbulence waves however are very complex. For a long time it seemed impossible to fully describe them.
In recent years researchers of the Johann Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen made great progress in mathematical methods for calculating turbulent flows. There was also an extensive growth of the power of computers. These developments together will make it possible to describe the patterns of waves around an airplane wing in detail.
Thanks to a private donation of 250,000 euros, the Faculty of Science and Engineering have appointed a PhD candidate for this research since September 2010.
