Through the Alumni Chapter Hong Kong, the University of Groningen reaches out to more than 120 alumni that live in Hong Kong. The chapter organizes annual meetings hosted by Consul General and alumnus Wilfred Mohr. The meetings provide an opportunity for former students to foster the ties with each other and with the university, far away from home. The alumni chapters are an initiative of the Ubbo Emmius Fund.
During their most recent reception on September 2nd, the Hong Kong alumni decided to support a research project of the University financially. This makes the Hong Kong Chapter the first foreign alumni chapter to adopt a research project of the University, following the example of the Dutch alumni chapters.
The chapter will contribute to the PhD research of the talented Yinh-Chi Chan. Chan graduated cum laude from the University of Groningen in 2012, within the Erasmus Mundus Top Master program in Ecology and Evolution. With guidance of Spinoza winner prof. Theunis Piersma, she now researches the migration of birds between Northeast Asia and Australia. She mainly focusses on endangered waders in the Bohai Bay, and their adaption to man-made changes in the environment. For this research the University of Groningen works together with the Beijing Normal University and WWF-China.
Yinh-Chi Chan, prof. Theunis Piersma and of course the Executive Board members of the University are truly grateful for the support of alumni.
