To conduct inspired international education and research of the highest level, both the scientific and the support personnel require stable working conditions. United we stand.
As an internationally active scientist with a passion for good education and a strong social commitment I can give an important contribution to the University council. I helped usher in the first personnel council of the KVI. Within the physics department I have been the driving force to establish the curriculum committee for streamlining physics education. For the university as a whole I have been one of the initiators leading to the installation of advanced video-lecturing infrastructure that makes it possible to use the Donald Smits room for interactive international lectures.
In my opinion it is very important that our university takes a strong international position. This is to the advantage of education as well as research; students will learn early to operate in an international setting. My aim is to stimulate this. However, I am rather critical regarding the present plans for the branch campus in Yantai. The advantages for our university are not clear since there are many other opportunities for international cooperation that offer a greater diversity than a branch campus. In addition a branch campus requires significant efforts from our already stressed teachers and staff.
To be able to offer an optimal environment for study and research it is necessary to have good collaboration between the scientific and the support personnel. The latter group must receive recognition for the professional contributions it gives, often behind the scenes, to enhance the quality. I whole-heartedly support a strong social policy. United we stand.
