The goal of this dissertation is to analyze and describe the workings of the Spanish State censorship during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) and its impact on the development of the Catalan literature between 1962 and 1977. In addition, it documents the great efforts made by the literary establishment in Catalonia, to oppose and neutralize the effects of censorial interference in the same time frame. This study takes 1962 as its starting point because of the appointment in that year of Manuel Fraga Iribarne as head of the reorganized Department of Information and Tourism, hailed as introducing a new period of and approach toward censorship. One of the newly appointed minister's tasks was to elaborate a new censorship law. The main adjustment in this new law was the abolition of the requirement that all books be submitted to the censors before publication. Although Catalan literature did experience growth during this time period, the present study argues that this upsurge cannot be attributed to the newly relaxed censorship law. Indeed, this dissertation argues that censorship treated Catalan literature as severely with the new Ley as it did before its introduction. As such this dissertation shows that is was first of all due to the enormous efforts and even sacrifices made by Catalan publishers, cultural organizations and the resilience of the writers themselves, that the Catalan literature could achieve the grade of normalcy and even growth it experienced between 1962 and 1977.
