Rie Bosman (1951) teaches at the Faculty’s Sociology department. She also acts as PhD mentor for the ICS graduate school. Bosman studied Educational Sciences at the University of Groningen, specializing in the sociology of education, following which she completed the university teacher training programme in Social Studies. In 1993 she gained her PhD with research into the school performance of children from single-parent households.
In 2014 Bosman won the Jacques van Nieuwstadt Award, a prize awarded every two years by students to the most inspiring lecturer of the Sociology department. This year she was voted Lecturer of the Year for the entire faculty. Bosman is acclaimed by her students for her unique ability to enthuse them about her subject. In her lectures she stimulates students to think along and discuss the topics under study. She links every lecture to current themes, takes a personal interest in her students, and knows how to involve everyone in the discussion. In the words of her students: ‘She does not stand in front of a class, but right in the middle of it!’
