Inaugural lecture Ms Prof J.A. Shapiro: Innovation and Culture Change: Supporting Safe Healthcare

When:Tu 13-10-2015 at 16:15
Where:Aula Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen

Physicians involved in events that cause patient harm can suffer serious emotional consequences including fear, isolation, anger and shame. These emotions and the accompanying stress can in turn lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout, depression, and even suicide. When healthcare providers suffer in this way, it has an inevitable impact on patient care; the quality of care diminishes, and the work culture of our institutions suffers as well. Physician leaders at UMCG are dedicated to addressing this problem. In addition, it is imperative that all members of the health care team communicate respectfully, even when there is conflict. This level of professionalism is required for maintaining a culture of psychological safety.

Several initiatives are underway, under the leadership of Dr. Jo Shapiro, that are designed to address the concerns of physician emotional stress and its impact on patient safety. These include a peer support program to provide a support for physicians during emotional stress, disclosure coaching to help physicians be honest and compassionate to patients and family members following a medical error, and a program to train leaders in professionalism and to then hold accountable those who have difficulty demonstrating professional behaviors. These programs will be developed and studied over the next several years. Our goal is to support a culture of trust and respect that will further enhance UMCG’s strong commitment to providing excellent patient care while supporting the wellbeing and emotional health of its physicians.
