No doubt about it: there is a pressing need for improvement in how the output of academic research and thus researchers are being evaluated. Luckily, this no longer is a shout in the dark from researchers. Instead, it is now a serious matter of discussion for important stake-holders such as the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The discussion on research evaluation builds on a fairly recent international initiative: the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). It pleas, amongst others, to get rid of the use of journal-based metrics such as impact factors for evaluating researchers for funding, appointment and promotion.
But what is the alternative and is the alternative really an improvement? How would this work for different disciplines? And should researchers be evaluated by our universities for appointment and promotions using the same system as funding bodies use for selecting those eligible for grants? During this ECR lunch we will discuss the pros and cons of the DORA initiative and the related Leiden Manifesto.
Your input will be taken into account during the Evolution or Revolution event organized by NWO.
When: May 8th, 12:00 - 14:00
Where: Van Swinderen Huys, Glass Room, Oude Boteringestraat 19, Groningen.
