PhD day 2016: “Unity in Diversity”

When:Fr 16-09-2016 08:30 - 21:00
Where:UMCG Education Center

In 2015, 245 PhD students graduated with a doctoral degree from one of the nine Graduate Schools of the University of Groningen. After their graduation, these students enter the job market again, looking for a new challenge.

To help PhD students prepare themselves for the job market and to provide them with the essential skills for after their graduation, a yearly career event is organized in association with the Groningen Graduate Schools and GOPHER, a university-wide PhD student association. The 2016 PhD day will take place on Friday 16 September 2016 at the UMCG Education Center.

The theme of this year’s PhD day is “Unity in Diversity”, aiming to highlight the diversity within the university: in terms of research programs, potential careers as well as the cultural backgrounds of PhD students. To address this theme, lectures such as ‘Embracing Diversity in Academia’ and ‘My Entrepreneurial Journey: Unifying Diverse Markets’ will be organized. In addition, there will be workshops to strengthen important skills for both academic and non-academic career such as public speaking, scientific writing, time management and intercultural effectiveness training.

More than 400 PhD students, post-docs and master students will participate in this year’s event to interact and share their knowledge. In agreement with the theme “Unity in Diversity” these students are of 55 different nationalities and come from all 9 graduate schools.

The 2016 PhD day is a great opportunity to meet experts from inside and outside of academia, to speak with companies and to network with other PhDs, master students and post-docs from other graduate schools/faculties. During the day, plenary sessions as well as parallel sessions will be held including lectures, workshops, panel discussions and speed dating sessions. The event is supported by the University of Groningen and companies, such as Healthy Aging Campus, Philips Research, Work in Denmark, TNO, IBM Research, and many more.
