On tuesday 25 June, the SIB has the honour to receive the Ambassador of the Republic Korea in The Hague, mr. Lee. It was exactly 63 years ago on this date that the Korean War started, when troups of The Democratic People's Republic of Korea invaded the South crossing the 38th Parallel.
Tonight, mr. Lee will look back in Korean history and tell us about the war, the situation afterwards and how South-Korea went on to develop itself in the past 60 years to one of the most advanced economies in the world. Furthermore he will also talk about the relationship between the Netherlands and South-Korea and his position as ambassador.
For over 300 years there have been connections between Korea and the Netherlands, of which 50 years of intensive cooperation. This has led to a good trade relationship and a interesting interplay of the different cultures. The Netherlands is the third investor in South Korea, ranking only after the US and Japan, a position that should not be underestimated.
