PhD position in Greek and/or Latin Literature (1.0 FTE) (V25.0276)

Job description

Thanks to the generosity of the Sent Marks Fonds we are able to invite applications for a fully funded, 4-year PhD position in the field of Classical Literature. The dissertation should make a novel contribution to the study of ancient Greek or Latin literature in relation to posthumanism and/or environmental criticism. Candidates are free to design a project within this remit, according to their own interests and expertise. They may focus on one specific work or author, or engage with a range of genres and texts while focusing on a specific theme or approach. The project should be of suitable size to be completed within four years. The selected candidate will be based at the Chair group of Latin and Greek Literature and Culture and will be affiliated with the Research Institute for the Study of Culture Groningen (ICOG). They will be enrolled in the Groningen Graduate School for the Humanities and the Dutch national graduate school for Classics, OIKOS. They will also be able to participate in the activities of the Groningen institute for the study of the ancient world (CRASIS).

The position involves

  • Writing a dissertation within four years.
  • Completing relevant PhD training courses as offered by the local and national graduate schools.

Carrying out limited teaching tasks in the Classics department (0.4 FTE in total spread across the appointment, with the opportunity to receive relevant training in advance).

Qualifications

Candidates should possess

  • A Master’s degree in Latin and/or Ancient Greek literature or in a related field.
  • An interest in posthumanist theory and/or the environmental humanities.
  • Very good knowledge of Latin and/or Ancient Greek.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English.
  • Reading proficiency in relevant modern languages (e.g. German, Italian, French) or ability and willingness to acquire it.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Willingness to move to/reside in Groningen.

Since the dissertation will be written in English, no knowledge of Dutch is required. However, the University of Groningen offers language classes to employees who would like to learn the Dutch language.

Organisation

Conditions of employment

We offer in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for Dutch universities:

  • A salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 2,901 to a maximum of € 3,707 gross per month for a full-time position.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Participation in a pension scheme for employees.
  • Favourable tax agreements for non-Dutch applicants may be applicable.
  • 232 holiday hours per calendar by full-time employment.
  • A temporary 1.0 FTE appointment for a specified period of four years. The candidate will first be appointed for twelve months. After 11 months, an assessment will take place of the candidate’s results and the progress of the PhD project, in order to decide whether employment will be continued. The PhD candidate is expected to conduct 0.4 FTE teaching spread over the second, third and fourth year of their appointment.
  • Willingness to move and reside in The Netherlands.
