Jochen Mierau

Jochen Mierau is hoogleraar Economie van de Volksgezondheid en doet onderzoek naar gezondheidsverschillen. “Het is een bekend gegeven dat mensen in verschillende groepen van elkaar verschillen op het gebied van gezondheid. Die groepen zijn bijvoorbeeld gebaseerd op regio, sociaaleconomische positie, opleiding of inkomen. Ik doe onderzoek naar hoe die verschillen tot stand komen en welke mechanismes daaraan bijdragen. Daarover onderwijs ik tevens studenten en professionals om die kennis te laten groeien.”

Mierau legde in 2016 de basis voor de totstandkoming van de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJSPH) en was tot de zomer van 2022 wetenschappelijk directeur. Sinds 1 juli 2022 is hij wetenschappelijk directeur bij de noordelijke data- en biobank Lifelines. Lifelines is de grootste data- en biobank van Nederland. Ruim 167.000 Nederlanders bieden al 15 jaar vrijwillig inzicht in hun gezondheid. Daarmee geven we antwoorden op de vragen van nu, vergroten we de kennis over ziektes en brengen we realtime de impact van ziektes in kaart.

Tijdens de Corona-crisis was Mierau een van de experts die door het Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport werd gevraagd om advies uit te brengen over het coronabeleid. Mierau was ook een van de initiatiefnemers van het Lifelines coronaonderzoek. Dat moest een beeld geven van zowel de ziekte COVID-19, risicofactoren op ernstige ziekteverschijnselen en de psychische gevolgen van de crisis.

Mierau stelt zich kritisch op over maatschappelijke gezondheidsverschillen. Zijn voorstel om gezondheidsdoelen in de wet op te nemen zijn gesteund door artsenorganisatie KNMG en zeventig andere organisaties. Verder pleit Mierau voor een vernieuwing van het zorgstelsel.
