Hoenders, prof. dr. Rogier

Prof. Rogier Hoenders is Professor by special appointment at the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society of the University of Groningen. Hoenders focuses on complementary care, lifestyle, and spirituality. Throughout his career, Hoenders has been interested in and committed to various forms of informal care. Think of lifestyle interventions, meditation, yoga, running against depression, healthy eating, breathing exercises, etc. He has also been engaged in complementary care, such as natural remedies, for some time.
Hoenders gave his inaugural lecture at the University of Groningen, entitled 'Gezonder leven, een gebed zonder end?'. With this inaugural lecture, he accepted the new chair at the intersection of spirituality, lifestyle, and mental health. In this role, Hoenders hopes to bring more attention to spirituality and focus on personal growth and better treatment results. The focus on spirituality and lifestyle creates room for an approach that is in line with the cultural identity, life philosophy, and wishes of individual patients.
In addition to his position as professor by special appointment, Hoenders works as a psychiatrist and international speaker in the fields of lifestyle, spirituality, and integrative medicine. At Lentis, he runs his own integrative psychiatry department (CIP). According to Hoenders, spirituality is at the heart of sustainable behavioural change: ‘Lifestyle goals are more likely to materialize if they are connected to what a person finds truly important in life.’
Hoenders is also active internationally and collaborates with researchers and clinicians from the US, Brazil, Germany, and India. As a world expert for the World Health Organisation (WHO), he advises on issues related to lifestyle, medicine, and Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM).
