Pavillon, Prof. Charlotte
Charlotte Pavillon is Professor of Private Law, in particular of Consumer Law, at the Faculty of Law. Pavillon studied International Relations and International Organizations, and European and International Law at the University of Groningen. She obtained her PhD with the thesis ‘Open standards in European consumer law. The unfair commercial practice directive from a comparative perspective.’ Her areas of interest are European private law, consumer law, and contract law.
In her research, Pavillon focuses on how businesses deal with the protection offered by consumer law, such as providing clear terms and conditions to consumers and preventing false discounts and promises, among other things. She is also interested in the interplay between national and European law. She advocates for raising the awareness of consumer law and for it to be applied fairly. For the consumer, when a business fails to act transparently, and for the seller when they bear the brunt of the ‘claims culture’.
In addition to her research, Pavillon is a deputy judge for the North Netherlands District Court and a member of the Appeals Committee of the Financial Services Complaints Institute (Kifid).
