Barbro Melgert

Barbro Melgert is hoogleraar Respiratoire Immunologie aan de Faculteit Science and Engineering. Zij onderzoekt hoe immuuncellen in de longen reageren op schadelijke invloeden uit de omgeving, waaronder microplastics. Vanaf 2018 kreeg ze subsidies om het effect van microplastics op de longen te onderzoeken.

Wanneer kleding van synthetische stoffen gedragen, gewassen of gedroogd wordt, komen onzichtbare, kleine plastic deeltjes vrij in de lucht: microplastics. Met haar team liet Melgert zien dat nylonvezels uit kleding de ontwikkeling van luchtwegen in mini-longetjes verstoren. 

Melgert benadrukt dat blootstelling aan microplastics een probleem is dat niet alleen door consumenten, maar ook door de industrie en overheid moet worden aangepakt. Als individu kun je jezelf echter wél beschermen. Haar praktische advies: stofzuig regelmatig, ventileer je huis goed en kies liever voor duurzamere kleding in plaats van fast fashion.
