Melgert, Prof. Barbro

Barbro Melgert is Professor of Respiratory Immunology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She studies how immune cells in the lungs respond to harmful environmental influences, including microplastics. Since 2018, she has received grants to investigate the effects of microplastics on the lungs.
When clothing made of synthetic fabrics is worn, washed, or dried, invisible, tiny plastic particles are released into the air: microplastics. With her team, Melgert demonstrated that nylon fibers from clothing disrupt the development of airways in lab-grown mini-lungs.
Melgert stresses that exposure to microplastics is an issue that must be addressed not only by consumers, but also by industry and government. Still, individuals can take steps to protect themselves. Her practical advice: vacuum regularly, ventilate your home well, and opt for more sustainable clothing instead of fast fashion.
