New edition of the Science Shop Report is out

Is sustainability really expensive? How can we get rid of PFAS? Is there a need for more vegan food in care homes? These and many other questions are addressed in the latest edition of the Science Shop Report, which highlights various Science Shop projects from the past year.

The Science Shops collect scientific questions from members of the public and civil society organisations that lack the resources to carry out research themselves or commission it. In this way, the Science Shops act as a bridge between the university and society. The research is free of charge and is carried out by students under the supervision of academic staff. In this way, students learn how to conduct research and also discover what research can mean for society. This benefits society, science and the students themselves! This year, too, many residents, organisations and groups of people found their way to the Science Shops. Together with 709 students, we tackled 298 different research questions, resulting in 113 open-access publications.  

The annual report of the Groningen Science Shops highlights a number of student research projects from the past year. These range from philosophers who ask visitors of the Onlanden to put themselves in the shoes of the black-headed gull, to art history students who managed to trace the origins of a remarkable church panelling. The report is complemented by columns, poetry by the resident poet Hannan van Rooij and illustrations by Kim Dumoré.
