Writer and musician Auke Hulst is the new guest writer at the University of Groningen. In three lectures and a public interview with Professor of Modern Literature Mathijs Sanders this coming autumn he will explore the boundaries of literature, or as he terms it ‘swimming in brackish water’. He will also give seminars to a select group of students.

Programme

In his work Auke Hulst always seeks the boundaries: the boundaries between disciplines – literature, music, graphic novels, photography, poetry and essays – and genres, but equally between intuition and reason and engagement and isolation. He will use his own work and that of others to give his vision of the function and meaning of literature, the role of the landscape as decor and metaphor and cross-pollination between music and literature.

Auke Hulst

Auke Hulst (Hoogezand-Sappemeer, 1975) is a writer and musician. His debut was in 2006 with Jij en ik en alles daartussenin and he broke through to a wider audience with his autobiographical novel Kinderen van het Ruige Land (2012) about his complicated childhood in the Groningen hamlet of Denemarken. This was followed by the dystopian Slaap zacht, Johnny Idaho (2015) and En ik herinner me Titus Broederland (2016). His latest offering is the travel book Motel Songs (2017), which is accompanied by an album recorded in motel rooms. As well as writer Hulst is lead singer of the Dutch pop formation De Meisjes, essayist and literary critic for NRC Handelsblad.
