Marian Joëls appointed Dean of Medical Sciences and member of the Board of Management of the UMCG

The Board of the University of Groningen and the Supervisory Board of the University Medical Center Groningen have appointed Prof. Marian Joëls Dean of Medical Sciences and member of the Board of Management of the UMCG as of 1 September 2016. Joëls is also Professor of Neurosciences and Director of the Brain Center Rudolf Magnus, UMC Utrecht. Joëls will succeed Prof. Folkert Kuipers, who became Professor of Healthy Life Alliances at the UMCG on 1 April 2016.

Marian Joëls (Amsterdam, 1956) studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam. She gained her PhD in 1984 and started a research career. In 1997 she was appointed Professor of Zoology at the University of Amsterdam. In 2009 she was appointed Professor of Neurosciences at Utrecht University and Director of the Brain Center Rudolf Magnus, UMC Utrecht. She has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) since 2002 and has sat on several award committees in the field of neurosciences for the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Internationally renowned scientist

Joëls is an internationally renowned scientist who creates strong links between the laboratory and the clinic in her work. The Supervisory Board and the Board of the University are very pleased that Marian Joëls has been appointed to this position, which is very important to both the UMCG and the University of Groningen.

As of 1 September 2016, the Board of Management will consist of the following members: J.F.M. Aartsen (Chair), Prof. A.G.E van der Zee (Vice Chair), H.A. Snapper and Prof. M. Joëls (Dean). Within the Board of Management, the Dean is responsible for the teaching and research portfolios.
