By detecting when someone falls, medical help can be offered quickly. For the elderly, but also for construction workers at a building site, wearing a sensor that gives off a signal when the wearer falls, can be a solution. In his PhD research, Xueyi Wang studied fall detection from various angles.
Wang worked with a camera that a person can wear on their body, and developed algorithms to detect a fall based on the images from the camera. He also investigated the possibilities for using event-based cameras: such cameras only register actively when something changes in the brightness of the image, which makes them more energy-efficient.
