Curriculum Vitae

Oscar Couwenberg is currently Dean and Professor of Governance and Geography at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen. Prior to that he was Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Law. He started his academic career studying Economics and Business Administration in Groningen at the Faculty of Economics. He specialized in Corporate Finance. In 1990 he was appointed as assistant professor Corporate Finance in the Faculty of Economics. His research concentrated on firms in financial distress and he received his Ph.D. in 1997 on the thesis “Resolving Financial Distress in the Netherlands: A case study approach”. In 1999 he participated (part-time) in a research program on the efficiency of the Dutch Bankruptcy Law as senior researcher of the Business and Law Research Centre of the Radboud University (Nijmegen). In December 2001 he was appointed Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Groningen in the Faculty of Law. He has taught extensively in the topics of (Corporate) Finance, Law and Economics, Corporate Law and Economics (in English, as well as in Dutch). In September 2005 he became vice-dean of the Faculty of Law for a period of 4 years to September 2009. In January 2010 he was appointed Director of Research of the Faculty of Law for a period of three years, responsible for the research master of the Faculty, the PhD course curriculum and research policy of the Faculty. In 2013 he became Associate Dean of the English programs of the Faculty with the explicit aim to increase the international attractiveness of the programs. In September 2015 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and Professor of Governance and Geography. 

Apart from his responsibilities for the respective faculties, professor Couwenberg has been active in promoting internationalization for the University of Groningen in various roles. He was appointed coordinator, responsible for developing international collaboration, for the U4 for the field of Social Sciences, Economics and Law. The U4 is a strategic cooperation between 4 European research Universities: Göttingen, Ghent, Uppsala and Groningen. In March 2013 he was asked by the Executive Board of the University to start the University of Groningen research priority “Sustainable Society” for a period of one year. Next, as chairman of the International Classroom steering group he promotes the concept of the International Classroom within the University.

Apart from his academic career, he is associated (part-time) with a corporate finance consultancy firm, MBCF, as consultant to medium sized enterprises.
