Lea Diestelmeier works as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, section Energy Law, and is part of the Faculty-broad Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability. She is also funded by the Sectorplan 'the Public-Private Challenge' which is carried out together with the Erasmus School of Law, University of Rotterdam. Her research focuses on EU energy law and in particular electricity sector regulation and decentral solutions for the energy transition. This includes, for example, the changing role of energy consumers and the stake of citizens in the energy sector, and alternative communal organisations participating in activities related to energy, i.e. ‘energy communities’. Beyond the implementation and operation of new technologies, Lea is interested in how energy law can facilitate democratization and justice (see for a detailed overview of research output section on 'research'). She is involved in various European and Dutch research projects in the context of which she acts as the (daily) supervisor of several PhD students (see for an overview section on 'projects'). She also teaches in the LLM programme 'Energy and Climate Law', the Bachelor-level Minor programme 'Energy Transition from Multidisciplinary Perspectives' (see for an overview section on 'teaching'), she co-coordinates the Dutch postacademic programme 'Energierecht in de praktijk', and she supervises various student assistentships and junior researchers. Lea obtained her PhD in 2019 at the University of Groningen which was supervised by Prof. dr. Hans Vedder and Prof. dr. Martha Roggenkamp.
