C.T. Nieuwenhout, LLM
Dr. Ceciel Nieuwenhout is currently a postdoc researcher in Energy Law at the Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability. In her current research, she focuses on the legal aspects of the energy transition in the built environment, focused on 'positive energy districts' and monumental buildings. This research takes place within the context of Horizon2020 project POCITYF (www.pocityf.eu).
Earlier, Nieuwenhout participated in Horizon2020 project PROMOTioN (Progress on Meshed HVDC Offshore Transmisssion Networks), where she researched the legal and regulatory framework for an offshore HVDC grid in the North Sea and the offshore renewable energy sources connected to it (www.promotion-offshore.net).
Education: Nieuwenhout completed a PhD on the legal framework for an offshore electricity grid in the North Sea (Groningen, 2020). Before starting as a PhD-researcher, Ceciel Nieuwenhout acquired an LLM degree from the College of Europe in Bruges in the programme European Legal Studies (graduated cum laude in 2016). Moreover, she obtained an LLM-degree from the University of Groningen in European Law with the specialisation Energy and Climate Law (graduated in 2015). She has an LLB-degree ‘International and European Law’ combined with Dutch law from the University of Groningen (graduated in 2013).
Interests: Ceciel Nieuwenhout’s current research interests are Energy Law, European Law, Law of the Sea and Competition and State Aid Law applied to the energy sector.
Other function: next to her work at the University, Ceciel is a city council member for the greens (GroenLinks) in the city council of Groningen.
