C.J. (Caroline) van Toor, MA

My interest is in societal history. During my studies, I specialized in funerary epigraphy and iconography in the Greek East, from the Archaic to Late Roman/Early Christian period. In my PhD I focus on mortuary practices, particularly on commemoration practices and self-representation on funerary monuments, integrating textual, visual, and material aspects.
Side projects and interests include the literary knowledge in funerary epigrams, nationalism in archaeology, and the way in which the use of language both shapes and limits the way we think.
