Third edition TechTalks050, September 30: AI and law – Robotization in the courtroom

07 September 2019

Artificial intelligence (AI) is enjoying a great deal of interest. And for a good reason – with AI, computers can do a lot more: they can become masters in games like chess and Go, and cars can learn to drive themselves better and better. Today, the discussion revolves around artificial intelligence and law. Could AI also replace the judge ? And now, as the risks of AI are also increasing (for example, the loss of privacy and weaponized robots), should AI perhaps not be linked to law?

When: Monday 30 September 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Where: DOT Groningen, Vrydemalaan 2

Bart Verheij, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Argumentation (University of Groningen) researches the link between AI and law. During his presentation, he will explore the current and expected influence of AI on law. Should we soon allow Big Data to determine the judge’s verdict? Will AI make the work of judges and lawyers redundant? And what if AI makes a mistake? Could robots be held liable?

Reinoud Baker is the cofounder of LexIQ, an organization that has developed machine learning software. This software makes it possible to unlock large databases and make them accessible for analyses and, on the basis of this, make predictions. With their AI algorithms, it is possible to quickly search through legal texts to filter out the right information. Will they also soon be able to predict judges’ verdicts?
