Study Trip to the Eemshaven, Province of Groningen

24 August 2016, departure at 13:00

During the guided tour the impact of energy on the past and future landscape of Groningen will be discussed. In particular, the challenges of the region to cope with the current shift from fossil fuel based energy systems to an energy system based more on renewable sources will be addressed.

The participants will observe some examples of soil substance due to gas extraction and its consequences for water management as well as visit the village of Onderdendam that is striving for an energy neutral village.

The largest on land wind farm of the Netherlands is located in the Eemshaven, a deep-sea port that serves as a logistical hub in the Northwest European sea lanes . The size and impact of the wind farm will be discussed as well as its comparison to the fossil fuel energy plants on location. There is also one of the most modern coal fired power plants in the world, where issues such as using additional biomass in the plant and carbon capture are on the agenda.

The trip will end with a detour to see some of the largest energy consumers in the north of the Netherlands, namely two servers of Google that aim to be energy neutral. The nearby chemical industry in Delfzijl, which is now under economic pressure due to the likely end of gas extraction in the Groningen region, will be also discussed. Finally, the participants will pass through a region where gas extraction is currently creating some severe problems due to earthquakes.

The excursion will take around 4 - 5 hours, including 2 hours in the Eemshaven.
