Organization

The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials is a research institute within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE). This Faculty is governed by the Faculty Board. The Faculty is part of the University of Groningen. The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials is a participant in the Centre for Synthetic Biology.

The ultimate responsibility for the lines of research, the selection of personnel, and the allocation of funds in the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials rests with the Scientific Director, who is appointed by the Faculty Board. He functions as the official representative of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials.

The Board of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials is appointed by the Faculty Board. Its role is to review and approve proposals by the Scientific Director concerning long-term research plans, the annual budget, and personnel selection. The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials board also advises the Faculty Board on matters concerning the Scientific Director, in particular his replacement; it functions as a sounding board for the Scientific Director on policy matters; and coordinates and supervises the educational part of the PhD programme.

There is an  International Advisory Panel (IAP) consisting of leading scientists to advise the Scientific Director and the Board of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials.

The Scientific Director, the Board and the IAP are assisted by the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Coordinating Office.

Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials is made up of 26 Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Research groups. (To be precise, there is a slight difference between members and associate members; read the details here.)

There is a higher-level grouping of research groups separately for education (into Educational institutes) and for research (into Focus Areas; see under Research Programme).
