Sustainable chemistry and nanotechnology call for new ways to induce chemical processes on demand. For this, molecules have to be stored and released in controlled and efficient ways. In particular, "batteries" for small, energy-rich molecules are sought for.

In this talk, two different approaches for storing and releasing energy-rich organic molecules will be presented. One of the approaches employs rigid adamantane derivatives that crystallize to form cavities. These organic materials take up small molecule guests and have the ability to release those guests under a number of different conditions. The other approach uses DNA triplex motifs to store and release biochemical "fuel", i.e. nucleoside triphosphates or (reduced) cofactors. Either approach relies on synthetic constructs that can be produced in macroscopic quantities.
