Biomedical applications of nanomaterials: From benchtop to clinic

Abstract

The use of nanomaterials in biomedicine merges multidisciplinary fields such as material science, chemistry, biology and medicine. In particular, various types of nanoparticles comprised of either organic or inorganic materials provide an increasingly wide range of biomedical applications: drug/gene delivery, bioimaging, and sensing. In addition, devices using nanotechnology are useful in the analysis of preclinical/clinical samples as well as the implantation of prostheses and stents.

This presentation will address biomedical applications of nanomaterials, particularly focusing on their evaluation in vitro as well as in preclinical models. For examples, I will introduce my recent research on nano-delivery systems using inorganic (e.g., gold nanoparticles) and organic nanoparticles (e.g., lipids and cationic polymers), and implantable devices (e.g., drug-eluting platforms) in collaboration with basic scientists and clinicians. To bridge the gap between preclinical and clinical studies, I will further discuss various clinical evaluations using toxicological, hematological and immunological approaches
