ABSTRACT

The general theme of this talk is the new physics that occurs near interfaces between normal metals with strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic materials. In the first part of the talk I will discuss how so-called Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya are induced at these interfaces, and how they give rise to stabilization of topological magnetic textures called skyrmions. The second part of the talk focuses on the coupling between conduction-electron spins and magnetic moments across an interface that leads to the possibility of spin injection from a metal into an insulator. I will describe our proposal to use this type of spin injection to achieve Bose condensation of magnons and to study the resulting superfluid spin transport.
