Abstract

Recently, research on organic solar cells (OSCs) has made significant progress. Despite the promising growth in power conversion efficiency, poor stability is a problem for OSCs. In this presentation, I talk about small molecules OSCs based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as donor and fullerene (C60) as acceptor.

In the first part, I’m going to talk about our work on improving the stability of OSCs. Electrodes and buffer layers have essential roles in performance and stability of OSCs. First, I introduce a method modifying ITO/PEDOT:PSS anode in order to achieve a longer lifetime OSCs. By inserting an ultra-thin layer of Au at PEDOT:PSS/CuPc interface in a planar CuPc/C60 based OSCs, we obtain a significant improvement in stability. Next, I will focus on the work done on the cathode to increase the stability of OSCs. We found Ag cathode is able to more efficiently block water and oxygen diffusion into the organic layers than Al cathode. In addition, substituting Bphen for BCP as cathode buffer layer results in great improvement in the lifetime of the OSCs, indicating the combination of Bphen/Ag is more suitable for OSCs stability improvement.

In the second part of the presentation, I will introduce a new structure of OSCs, in which CuPc nano-rods are grown through a process on C60 islands to increase effective donor-acceptor interfacial area. Different OSCs were fabricated using these nano-rods and compared with planar bilayer OSCs higher current density was achieved as expected.
