New BICS member Niels Burgler
05 January 2026
We welcome Niels Burgler as a new PhD student in the BICS group.
Niels Burgler is interested in contributing to a more energy-efficient future for artificial intelligence (AI), and believes this is best achieved by taking inspiration from the brain and moving towards biologically plausible models. He earned his BSc and MSc in AI at the University of Groningen. During his Master's degree, Niels focused on robotics and computational intelligence, while also gaining his first in-depth experience with neuromorphic computing. His PhD is part of the Stochastic Spiking Wireless Multimodal Sensory Systems (SWIMS) ERC Synergy project, which aims to implement smart wireless multimodal sensory systems using neuromorphic architectures.
