PITSTOP - Novel detector technology for particle physics and proton therapy
Dr Kazuyoshi Carvalho Akiba & Dr Kristof de Bruyn (Nikhef/RUG)
The PITSTOP project will develop innovative technology for particle detection based on silicon carbide material to achieve timing capability in the picosecond range, excellent spatial resolution, and high resistance to radiation damage at room temperature. These three requirements are crucial for the next generation of detectors used in applications ranging from clinical proton irradiation and imaging to high energy particle collider experiments. Based on this technology we will create a new setup to measure energies of single protons at 100 MHz rate, using the Time-of-Flight technique. The real-time control of proton energies can lead to major improvements in patient treatment.
