Abstract:
Over the past half century Jim Peebles has been standing as a giant over the development of cosmology to one of the most active areas of research in physics and astronomy. He played a key role in the development of cosmology as a physical science, by seminal contributions such as the prediction and understanding of the cosmic microwave background, the potential of using the primordial soundwaves towards unravelling its properties, to establishing our understanding of the formation of structure in the Universe, how to use the distribution of galaxies towards understanding the process and in the realization of the crucial influence of dark matter and dark energy.
The first exoplanet discovery in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, a hot Jupiter orbiting around the star 51 Peg, opened a new field of astrophysics: the search for exoplanets, exoplanet population studies and the characterization of exoplanets including their atmospheres. This work has led to new technological developments pushing for the detection and characterization of Earth-like planets and it has truly changed how we perceive our own place in the universe.
