Research Our research Research per discipline English Literature and Linguistics

Research

Research in the Department covers all areas of English literature and linguistics. Our particular strengths lie in medieval and early modern culture, Romanticism, Modernism, language development, and we publish widely on such topics as critical theory, visual culture, travel literature, Western literature on the Pacific, women's writing, medieval learning, manuscript studies, or language acquisition and loss.

A number of our research efforts are embedded in the two largest research institutes in the Faculty of Arts: the Centre for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG), for research in the field of linguistics; and the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) for research in history, art history, literature, and the intellectual, political, literary and artistic culture. In addition, our medievalists and early modernists contribute to the Groningen-based Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies (NRSMS).

In the CLCG, our linguists participate in the research group Neurolinguistics and Language Development, where as our literature specialists participate in three ICOG research centres, the Research Centre for Arts in Society and Research Centre for Historical Studies.

Beyond Groningen, our staff are members of many international research initiatives across all areas of English language and literature.
