ALW Open grant for Prof. Van der Klei

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)has awarded Prof. Ida van der Klei of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB)  an ALW Open grant of EUR 293,000.

Van der Klei’s project focuses on transporting proteins to peroxisomal membranes. Peroxisomes are organelles with enzymes crucial to several processes of metabolism in the cell. Failing peroxisomes often leads to fatal diseases. It was recently discovered that the proposed models for transportation are not correct. With the ALW Open grant, Van der Klei will study in detail how particular peroxisomal membrane proteins are transported to peroxisomes, leading to improved diagnostics and possibly development of treatments of peroxisomes related diseases.
