Arts, Narrative and Cognition

This theme group carries out research in the humanities incorporating findings from neuroscience, evolutionary biology and psychology. We study basic human cognitive processes based on our expertise in various areas of human culture, both of the past and the present. This research is both theoretical and based on case studies of human culture, with a special focus on narrative.

Our expertise allows us to make a substantial contribution to the knowledge of human cultural cognition, and especially the role that narrative plays in this. We aim at contributing to the study of human cognition and its evolution from a humanities perspective, and to the study of narrative from the perspective of the sciences of cognition.

Our work has a direct social impact: research on cultural cognition and narrative grounds the practical projects we carry out in the field of arts and applied narratology.
