May Wu is the new Data Steward / Privacy & Security Officer at the Faculty of Arts

06 May 2026

Hi everyone,

I’m May, and I am excited to step into the role of Data Steward / Privacy & Security Officer at the Faculty of Arts. It feels wonderful to return to the University of Groningen!

Many of you might recognize me, as I recently completed my PhD in Applied Linguistics here at RUG in 2025. During my doctoral research and subsequent work as a data analyst for international collaborations, I developed a deep passion for the "behind-the-scenes" of research: ensuring data is not only insightful but also FAIR, secure, and ethically handled. As a researcher myself, I know firsthand the challenges of balancing complex data collection and management with strict privacy requirements. I am currently still managing the extensive dataset from my own PhD, comprising thousands of recordings, interviews, and questionnaires. Navigating the complexities of data usage, secure storage, and preparing for international collaborations has given me a practical perspective that I’m eager to share. I am truly happy that my experiences can now be used to support my colleagues in similar situations.

In my new role, I’ll be your point of contact for anything related to research data management, privacy protocols, and digital security. I’m eager to support you streamline your workflows and keep your data safe.

I am based at 1315.0350 on May 1st, 2026, so please do drop by to say hi! I’m always up for a chat about data, language learning, sports... Het is nog beter als we een conversatie in het Nederlands kunnen doen!

Looking forward to working with you all!

May Y. Wu
