Best Paper award for Dr. Hoeke Baarsma

Dr. Hoeke Baarsma won the Best Paper Award 2018 from the Stichting Astma Bestrijding (SAB) for his paper Noncanonical WNT-5A signaling impairs endogenous lung repair in COPD. He received his prize during the 10th Young Investigators Symposium of the Netherlands Respiratory Society.

The work on which is reported was performed during his postdoctoral studies at the Comprehensive Pneumology Center of the Helmholtz Zentrum in Munich (Ludwig Maximillians University). His project was funded by the European Respiratory Society and the Helmholtz Postdoc Programme.

Dr. Baarsma obtained his PhD research at the department of Molecular Pharmacology under supervision of Profs. Gosens and Meurs. After his postdoc in Munich he returned to the University of Groningen, where he now works as lecturer in pharmacology and policy officer for the Undergraduate School of Science and Engineering.

The SAB Best Paper Award is presented every year to a young investigator who performed his/her research in a research institute or hospital in the Netherlands, or to a Dutch investigator who performed his/her research abroad.
