The Orthopaedics and Trauma Summer School is an English-taught, 5-day educational program with a focus on Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Sports Medicine. The week consists of both an educational and social program. The summer school will be hosted by the University Medical Center Groningen and the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands.

The educational programme will consist of interactive lectures taught by experienced professors, researchers and medical doctors. Workshops will expand upon the lectures and will provide you with hands-on experience in understanding musculoskeletal anatomy and Orthopaedic surgical techniques. The main themes of our programme are:

• Joint wear and replacement and ligament injuries

• Bone fractures and surgical repair

• Sports injuries and rehabilitation

During the course there will be room for social activities. Join us for a barbecue in the Noorderplantsoen park, a boat tour through the canals of Groningen or explore the varied nightlife throughout the city. You will get to know the other international participants both inside and outside the hospital. We will share lovely meals in the city center and experience Dutch culture at its finest.

At the end of the course, participants will be rewarded with a certificate justifying their attendance and participation.

Requirements

Bachelor-/master-/postgraduates from the fields of medicine, biomedical sciences, biomedical technology, movement sciences, physical therapy or any related study field 

Level requirements

It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English.
Course schedule
The Orthopaedics and Trauma Summer School includes interactive lectures and workshops by experienced professors, researchers and medical doctors. Sessions cover themes such as joint wear and replacement and ligament injuries, bone fractures and surgical repair, and sports injuries and rehabilitation. Workshops aim to expand on the lectures and give participants hands-on experience in musculoskeletal anatomy and orthopaedic surgical techniques.
Workload

Preparation: 2 hours
Lectures: 22 hours
Workshops: 12 hours

Social programme: 6 hours

Upon successful completion of the programme, the Summer School offers a Certificate of Attendance that mentions the workload of 42 hours (28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS). Students can apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities in their home institutions, therefore the final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of their home institutions. We will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of attendance.

Information about the MA programme / faculty
The Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) is responsible for the selective masters and PhD education programmes within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Research within the UMCG ranges from fundamental to patient-oriented (clinical) research. The programmes available cover a wide range of research fields and are aimed towards students with a background in areas including biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, healthy ageing, healthcare, medicine, pharmacy, psychology and human movement sciences.
