Application

1. PhD positions with internal funding

Each year there is a call for PhD candidates. This year you can apply from 10 March 2020 until 21 April 2020 via the link on the website.

These candidates should submit:

  • a recent CV
  • a transcript of courses and results obtained at university level
  • a letter with a motivation for the research project, suitability, and choice of supervisor
  • a certified English language test
  • a research proposal with a maximum of 4 A-4 including an introduction of the central research question, the research questions, relevant literature, methodology, plan of action and the integration of the research in the research programmes of the Faculty.
  • a letter of recommendation concerning scientific performance.

2. PhD positions with external funding

When there is a PhD position with external funding available at the Faculty, information will be published on the web page Job Opportunities at the University of Groningen.

3. Contract-/sandwich PhD

Foreign PhD candidates who have acquired their own research funding (contract PhD's) can send in an application. PhD candidates who are partly funded by a university or other institution can apply for a sandwich PhD. For both categories candidates should submit:

  • a recent CV
  • a transcript of courses and diplomas obtained at university level
  • a letter with a motivation for the research project, suitability, and choice of supervisor
  • a certified English language test
  • a research proposal with a maximum of 4 A-4 including an introduction , of the central research question, the research questions, relevant literature, methodology, plan of action and the integration of the research in the research programmes of the Faculty.
  • a letter of recommendation concerning scientific performance.

In addition they have to give information whether they would like to come to the Netherlands for three or four years to do the research, or whether they would do most of the work in their home country.

4. External PhD

Foreign PhD candidates who will stay in their own country during their PhD, or PhD candidates who want to come to Groningen with their own savings, can send in an application. These candidates should submit:

  • a recent CV
  • a transcript of courses and diplomas obtained at university level
  • a letter with a motivation for the research project, suitability, and choice of supervisor
  • a certified English language test
  • a research proposal with a maximum of 4 A-4 including an introduction of the central research question, the research questions, relevant literature, methodology, plan of action and the integration of the research in the research programmes of the Faculty.
  • a letter of recommendation concerning scientific performance.
