Entry requirements
Before formally applying for a Double/Joint PhD, you should first check whether such a PhD trajectory is feasible in your case:
-
Contact the (prospective) partner institution to get confirmation that they are open to set up a Double/Joint degree if we do not have a collaboration with them already.
-
Check the timeline requirements to ensure feasibility: some universities have set enrolment dates/start dates, and deadlines for when a Double/Joint Degree application should be submitted differ per university, that may differ from the deadline and start dates at UG.
-
Find a supervisor (team) at the Faculty of Arts at UG and at the prospective partner institution: Double/Joint degree projects must have a supervisor with the right to promote (ius promovendi) at both institutions.
-
If you are a PhD candidate who is currently enrolled at the GSH Groningen and planning to do a Double/Joint doctorate with another institution, please contact doubledoctorates.gsh@rug.nl to inquire what the required next steps are for you.
Proof of English language proficiency

This official documentation should include an official test result, e.g. IELTS score, TOEFL score or Cambridge Certificate. This does not apply for Dutch candidates who plan to write their thesis in Dutch. The minimum scores required are:
IELTS:
Overall score of 7.0, and no lower than 6.5 on parts.
TOEFL iBT:
Overall score 100 (minimum 25 in Speaking and Writing)
Overall score 5 (minimum 5 in Speaking and Writing)
Other standardized tests:
Similar level to acceptable IELTS and TOEFL results. This will be determined by the GSH Admissions Board.
